What is the best way to move a sofa through a small doorway?

I am buying a new sofa (well, new to me), and it measures a little bigger than my doorway. I know there are strategies for tilting sofas to make it through -- do you have any helpful suggestions? My doorway is 33" and the sofa is a little more than 36" at the widest point. This can be done, right? Or can it just not work? Fingers crossed -- thanks ahead of time for ideas!

  1. Take all the cushions off (if they are removable) and unscrew the couch's "feet" (again, if applicable) and turn it so the back cushions are tilted toward the ground. That's usually the best way.
  2. Wow, too many times have i been in that position, take all the unnecessary parts off and tilt it in many different directions until you can get it through, but most importantly, REMOVE THE DOOR FROM IT'S HINGES!!!
  3. You just need to take the cushions off and tilt it sideways and see if it will go through the doorway. If you need a little extra room you may need to remove the door from the hinges. Good luck!
  4. Both previous answers are good tips. But if the sofa is shorter than the door, you can move it by lifting is up and corner it to the door to sway it in.
  5. 1 of 2 ways ;stand the sofa on it's end, then it can probably be rotated thru the opening. This will also keep you from having to hold it up while fighting it thru the door. 2,, if you and your helper feel strong enough, it probably can just be rotated about 45 degrees from it's' sitting position which makes it smaller across (usually), plan on "working "an end thru the door if the headrest has flares on the ends. You may need to pop the hinge pins or remove the hinges to make the opening larger. May seem like a lot of work, but you only do it a few times in a lifetime, so it's worth it! Good Luck
